Super Bowl 50 Trivia

We are two days away from Super Bowl 50, which will be the first Super Bowl not designated by a Roman numeral. Fifty in Roman numerals is "L," and "L" is also a symbol that has come to mean "loser." The NFL will resume using Roman numerals for Super Bowl LI.

Despite this being Super Bowl 50, it is only the 48th game dubbed as the "Super Bowl." The first two were called "The AFL-NFL World Championship," and were later known as Super Bowls I and II.

The Denver Broncos will be appearing in their eighth Super Bowl tying them with the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New England Patriots as the franchises that have been in the Super Bowl the most often.

The Carolina Panthers are one of thirteen teams that have never won a Super Bowl.

The Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings each lost all four times they appeared in the game. The Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles each lost the two times they have been in it. The Carolina Panthers lost the only time they previously appeared in it. The Arizona Cardinals, the Atlanta Falcons, the San Diego Chargers, and the Tennessee Titans also lost the only times they played in the Super Bowl.

The Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Houston Texans, and the Detroit Lions have never made it to the Super Bowl.

Despite both the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills having lost the Super Bowl four times, the team that has lost the game the most is the Denver Broncos with five Super Bowl losses.

Peyton Manning will become the oldest quarterback to start a Super Bowl in this game at age 39.

John Elway, the team’s President, holds the record until then. He was 38 when he led the same Denver Broncos to a victory in Super Bowl XXXIII. That was his fifth start in the Super Bowl, and his final game before retiring.

Super Bowl 50 will be Manning’s fourth start in the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady is the only quarterback to start more Super Bowl games (6) than John Elway (5).

The Seattle Seahawks had a chance to win Super Bowl XLIX against Brady’s Patriots, but Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass at the goal line with 26 seconds left in the game. Two previous Super Bowls were decided on plays later than the 26 seconds left in that game.

Buffalo kicker, Scott Norwood, missed a 47 yard field goal that would have given the Bills the lead, after which there were only 4 seconds left in Super Bowl XXV.

Tennessee Titan wide receiver, Kevin Dyson, caught a pass from Steve McNair and ran for the end zone for the winning touchdown, only to be tackled at the one foot line with no time left in Super Bowl XXXIV.

Three teams have represented two different cities in the Super Bowl. The Rams were in Los Angeles when they played in Super Bowl XIV, and in St. Louis when they played in Super Bowls XXXIV and XXXVI.

The Colts were in Baltimore when they played in Super Bowls III and V. They were in Indianapolis when they played in Super Bowls XLI and XLIV.

The Raiders were in Oakland when they played in Super Bowls II, XI, XV, and XXXVII. They were in Los Angeles when they played in Super Bowl XVIII.

The Baltimore Colts are the only team to have represented both the NFL (Super Bowl III), and, after the merger, the AFC (Super Bowl V).

Three cities have been represented in the Super Bowl by two different teams: Baltimore (Colts and Ravens), Los Angeles (Rams and Raiders), and New York (Giants and Jets).

Enough Super Bowl trivia for this game. Here is to hoping Super Bowl 50 is a great game that is not decided early so we can all enjoy it late into the fourth quarter!
